Well folks, it’s that time of year again here in the Eastern Sierra where the snow is constantly flying.  And with that comes some pretty treacherous road conditions.  So whether you are driving north, south, or even trying to get east or west, here’s a great website that can help you know what you are up against:

California Department of Transportation (aka “Caltrans”)

http://www.dot.ca.gov/cgi-bin/roads.cgi

Save this to your favorites/bookmarks for easy access to real-time road conditions.  All you have to do is quickly type in the highway number and it’ll tell you about closures, construction, restrictions, and delays.  You can also call their toll-free number at 800-427-7623.

Then the Town of Mammoth Lakes wishes to remind both locals and tourists to ‘be snow smart this winter!”

Here’s a great article that talks about Chain restrictions and the difference between R1, R2, and R3 chain restrictions.  Additionally, they go into detail about the few simple rules of being snow smart when operating a vehicle in an area that “receives some of the heaviest snowfall in California”.
