Truly a “December to Remember”, the Mammoth Lakes area received the second highest snowfall in December since records have been kept.  A total of 147.1 inches fell at Mammoth Mountain, with other areas nearby receiving more or less depending on elevation.  At Mammoth Pass, 15 feet of snow was measured as of January 2nd, and while it may seem like a lot, the moisture content is only 22 inches of water, which is just 50% of normal according to the Department of Water Resources and the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power.  The good news is that we still have our wettest months ahead (February and March) so let’s all keep our fingers crossed that the snow continues to fall.  So far, January has been dry and cold.

The number of visitors to the Town of Mammoth Lakes over the Christmas and New Year’s holidays was phenomenal!  Retailers and lodging owners report record totals.  Many would-be lodgers in Mammoth Lakes without reservations, had to be sent to Bishop!  This huge influx of people to the area can be problematic, as resources such as grocery stores, parking and even telephone and internet services are overwhelmed, but even though issues were reported by visitors and locals alike, nearly everyone had a great time.  Skiing and snowboarding conditions were excellent and Mammoth Mountain Ski Area seemed to handle the crowds with finesse.  There is so much to do in Mammoth Lakes, how could anyone be bored?

If you haven’t yet made this year’s winter trip to Mammoth Lakes, I wanted to be sure you knew that Easter comes early this year; it is on March 31st.  So, be sure to make your reservations soon.   And while you are here in Mammoth Lakes, I would be happy to help you find a place of your own.  Prices may be coming back up, but there are many great deals still to be had, whether you are looking for condos or single family homes.  I hope your 2013 is going great!
