The Eastern Sierra is known for the many lakes that are dispersed among our towering mountains and for the beautiful hikes leading you to them. Most of these hikes are long and take you into the pristine back-country, and may not be suitable for families with smaller children. If you are looking for a lake that is easily accessible, make sure to check out Convict Lake next time you are visiting Mammoth! The lake was named after an incident on September 23, 1871, where a group of convicts escaped from prison in Carson City. The Sheriff’s posse finally caught up with the convicts near the head of what is now Convict Creek at the outlet of Convict Lake. Located about 10 miles south of Mammoth off Highway 395, Convict is perhaps one of the most beautiful lakes in the area. The lake is surrounded by dramatic peaks, including Mount Morrison and Laurel Mountain, and the striated rock on the face of Laurel Mountain could be a geology lesson in itself! Convict is also one of the deepest lakes in the Eastern Sierra, and its pristine crystal-clear waters hold plenty of trout, both the stocked and wild varieties.

One of my favorite things to do at Convict is to meander along the trail that circles the lake. It’s an easy 2 ½ mile trail that is mostly flat, and takes you through a beautiful aspen grove and stand of fir trees. On the backside of the lake, a boardwalk takes you over the dozen or so streams that drain into the lake from the high mountains above. In the spring the wildflowers in the drainage are amazing, and in the fall the aspens put on a spectacular show of colors! Convict Lake Resort also rents kayaks, boats, and pontoon boats at the marina, so if you’d like to forgo hiking you can always paddle or motor to the back of the lake, park your boat on the edge of the lake, and walk the boardwalk (or you can sign up for a horse tour at the resort). Either way, you’re in for some great family fun! And after a fun day on the lake, have dinner at the renowned Convict Lake Restaurant, complete with a glass of wine to toast to another amazing day in the Sierra!
