I can honestly say I never thought I would end up lying in the dirt with a rifle in my hand shooting targets. Not only am I doing this, but I am doing this with four other mothers (each of whom has multiple children) and no men present. I tagged along just for fun and the shear desire to get out of the house after my newborn kept me up for yet another sleepless night. The purpose of the gathering was practice for the Mammoth Lakes Winter Biathlon, which until I took my first shot, I had no interest of actually participating in. However, after I found I could actually hit a target I signed up the minute I got home. Needless to say, this is after I got a very perplexed reaction from my husband.  I did not grow up in a sporty family or in a sporty environment so honestly, I did not even know what a Biathlon was until a few years ago.

A Biathlon combines Nordic skiing (either traditional or skate skiing) and rifle shooting. I have joined the beginner level where I will be doing 2 laps (1.5k each) and shooting 2 bouts (5 shots each). One of the series of shots will be while lying down and the other while standing. For every shot missed, I will have to do a penalty lap of 150 meters. I have never competed in any sport since I was very little so I have to say, I have no idea what I am in for. One thing I do know is that it is supposed to be a beautiful bluebird day and who could complain about spending it outside in Mammoth!

The race is this week-end, so check the blog next month to see how I did, and who knows, maybe I will see you in it next year! To find out more about Mammoth’s Winter Biathlon please visit http://thesheetnews.com/?s=biathlon&.x=0&.y=0
