The Lakes Basin isn’t just for the summer lovers around here, if you’ve ever been cross country skiing up at Tamarack you know what I’m talking about. Tamarack Lodge, located at Twin Lakes at the base of the Lakes Basin, offers not only winter accommodations in their cute cabins, great food at the Lakefront Restaurant, but also many winter activities such as cross country skiing, snowshoeing, snowmobile tours and much more.  This is my first year purchasing a Tamarack ski pass and with all the trails and beautiful backdrop I have to say it’s money well spent.  If you’re just coming up for a quick Mammoth getaway, a day pass and ski rentals are definitely worth it if this sounds like your cup of tea.

For myself personally, taking the time out of a busy work day to escape up to the Lakes Basin is best done in the afternoon and usually mid-week when the crowds have somewhat subsided and the pass holders have gotten their ski in for the day. I’ve found the afternoon one of the most beautiful times to take a cross country ski around the Lakes Basin for its serene calmness and stunning views even on those not so sunny days. Whether you start from Lake Mary Road or Tamarack Lodge, you have to be sure to head all the way up to Horseshoe Lake, one to enjoy the views along the way, but two because if you’ve ever seen it in the summer it’s that much more beautiful in the winter. The trails that are groomed can take you for a work out up to Lake George or a good solid ski around Lake Mary, or if you’re looking for easier skiing stay low around Tamarack Lodge and ski around Twin Lakes. The best part about the ski trails is there really are trails for all level cross country skiers, and even the little ones that I see skiing with their parents enjoy themselves! And if cross country skiing isn’t something you’ve tried before you can always opt for the snowshoeing experiences which I always see large groups do together and looks like a ton of fun. Tamarack Lodge also offers great lessons and courses for all levels and ages.

Take a look at Tamarack Lodge the next time you’re in Mammoth Lakes for some great winter activities and don’t pass up the hot chocolate at the Lodge…it’s delicious: http://www.tamaracklodge.com/Ski_Center.
