About Bishop, California

The City of Bishop has a population of about 3,500 and is located in the Eastern Sierra region of California southeast of Mammoth Lakes and Yosemite National Park. Although Bishop, California is a small city, its surrounding areas are the primary commercial and population center as well as the recreational center in the region. Lake Crowley, Mono Lake and other bodies of water around Mammoth Lakes and the Yosemite National Park make up a large portion of these recreational destinations.  Primary industries include tourism and recreation, government, and related support services. The mining industry and agriculture are important to Bishop’s heritage but have fallen off in years past as sources of economy for the region.

Although Bishop’s modern economy thrives, the small community  has stayed much like it has been for decades. It is well known as a great place to visit, to live, and to work in the Eastern Sierras. The City of Bishop covers slightly less than two square miles and is governed by a five member City Council. Bishop is rich in history and was named for the first white settlers who arrived in the area, Samuel A. Bishop. Bishop is located in Inyo County, the second largest in California. Before settlers came the Paiute and Shoshone Indians called these lands there home. Ancient Indian Petroglyphs are still visible on rocks north of Bishop.
